The chapter Relations and Functions is fundamental in Class 11 Maths and forms the backbone for calculus, coordinate geometry, and algebra in JEE Main.
Relation: A relation is a connection between elements of two sets.
Function: A function is a special type of relation where each element of the domain maps to exactly one element of the codomain.
Understanding notation, types, and properties of relations and functions is crucial for solving complex JEE Main problems.

A relation R from set A to set B is a subset of A × B, the Cartesian product of sets A and B.
Example: If A = {1, 2}, B = {x, y}, a relation R can be R = {(1, x), (2, y)}
Types of Relations:
Reflexive: Every element is related to itself (a, a) ∈ R
Symmetric: If (a, b) ∈ R then (b, a) ∈ R
Transitive: If (a, b) ∈ R and (b, c) ∈ R, then (a, c) ∈ R
Equivalence Relation: Relation that is reflexive, symmetric, and transitive
Equivalence relations are highly important in JEE Main proofs and reasoning-based questions.
A function f from set A to set B is a relation where each element of A corresponds to exactly one element of B.
Notation: f: A → B
Domain: Set of all inputs (A)
Codomain: Set of all possible outputs (B)
Range: Set of all actual outputs of f
One-One Function (Injective): No two elements of the domain map to the same element of the codomain.
Onto Function (Surjective): Every element of the codomain is mapped by some element of the domain.
Bijective Function: Both one-one and onto; invertible function
Constant Function: Every element of the domain maps to a single element in codomain
Identity Function: f(x) = x for all x in the domain
One-one and onto properties are frequently tested in JEE Main MCQs.
If f: A → B and g: B → C, the composite function g ∘ f is defined by:
g ∘ f(x) = g(f(x)) for all x ∈ A
Properties:
Associative: (h ∘ g) ∘ f = h ∘ (g ∘ f)
Important for problems in calculus and algebra
A function f: A → B has an inverse f⁻¹: B → A if it is bijective
Property: f(f⁻¹(x)) = x and f⁻¹(f(x)) = x
Graphical interpretation: Reflection across line y = x
Inverse functions are common in JEE Main function and calculus problems.
Domain and range can be identified from graphs
Linear, quadratic, cubic, and exponential functions are frequently used
Graphs help in understanding one-one and onto nature
Basis for Calculus: Limits, continuity, derivatives
Coordinate Geometry: Mapping points from one set to another
Algebraic Functions: Composition, inverse, and transformations
