The chapter Statistics is an important part of Class 11 Maths, providing tools to analyze and interpret numerical data. Understanding mean, median, mode, variance, and standard deviation is essential for solving data analysis problems efficiently, which frequently appear in JEE Main.
Statistics helps in summarizing large data sets and identifying patterns for decision making.

Central tendency helps to represent data by a single value that best describes the data set.
Mean (Arithmetic Mean):
Sum of all observations divided by the number of observations
Formula:
For raw data: x̄ = (Σxᵢ)/n
For frequency data: x̄ = (Σfᵢxᵢ)/(Σfᵢ)
Median:
Middle value of ordered data (or average of two middle values for even n)
For grouped data:
Median = l + [(n/2 – cf)/f] × h
l = lower boundary of median class
n = total frequency
cf = cumulative frequency before median class
f = frequency of median class
h = class width
Mode:
Most frequent observation
For grouped data:
Mode = l + [(f₁ – f₀) / (2f₁ – f₀ – f₂)] × h
l = lower boundary of modal class
f₁ = frequency of modal class
f₀ = frequency of previous class
f₂ = frequency of next class
h = class width
Example: Find mean of 5, 8, 10, 12 → (5 + 8 + 10 + 12)/4 = 35/4 = 8.75
Dispersion measures how spread out the data is.
Range:
Difference between maximum and minimum values
Range = Max – Min
Variance (σ²):
Average squared deviation from mean
Formula:
σ² = Σ(xᵢ – x̄)² / n
Standard Deviation (σ):
Square root of variance
σ = √σ²
For frequency data:
σ² = [Σfᵢ(xᵢ – x̄)²] / Σfᵢ
Coefficient of Variation (CV):
Relative measure of dispersion
CV = (σ / x̄) × 100%
Example: For data 2, 4, 6 → x̄ = 4
Variance = [(2–4)² + (4–4)² + (6–4)²]/3 = (4 + 0 + 4)/3 = 8/3 ≈ 2.67
Standard deviation = √2.67 ≈ 1.63
Combined Mean:
If two data sets with n₁, x̄₁ and n₂, x̄₂ are combined:
x̄ = (n₁x̄₁ + n₂x̄₂) / (n₁ + n₂)
Combined Standard Deviation:
For two combined sets:
σ² = [Σ(x – x̄)²] / N (using deviation from mean formula)
