Introduction to Statistics for JEE Main

The chapter Statistics is an important part of Class 11 Maths, providing tools to analyze and interpret numerical data. Understanding mean, median, mode, variance, and standard deviation is essential for solving data analysis problems efficiently, which frequently appear in JEE Main.

Statistics helps in summarizing large data sets and identifying patterns for decision making.

Measures of Central Tendency

Central tendency helps to represent data by a single value that best describes the data set.

  1. Mean (Arithmetic Mean):

  • Sum of all observations divided by the number of observations

  • Formula:

    • For raw data: x̄ = (Σxᵢ)/n

    • For frequency data: x̄ = (Σfᵢxᵢ)/(Σfᵢ)

  1. Median:

  • Middle value of ordered data (or average of two middle values for even n)

  • For grouped data:
    Median = l + [(n/2 – cf)/f] × h

    • l = lower boundary of median class

    • n = total frequency

    • cf = cumulative frequency before median class

    • f = frequency of median class

    • h = class width

  1. Mode:

  • Most frequent observation

  • For grouped data:
    Mode = l + [(f₁ – f₀) / (2f₁ – f₀ – f₂)] × h

    • l = lower boundary of modal class

    • f₁ = frequency of modal class

    • f₀ = frequency of previous class

    • f₂ = frequency of next class

    • h = class width

Example: Find mean of 5, 8, 10, 12 → (5 + 8 + 10 + 12)/4 = 35/4 = 8.75

Measures of Dispersion

Dispersion measures how spread out the data is.

  1. Range:

  • Difference between maximum and minimum values

  • Range = Max – Min

  1. Variance (σ²):

  • Average squared deviation from mean

  • Formula:

    • σ² = Σ(xᵢ – x̄)² / n

  1. Standard Deviation (σ):

  • Square root of variance

  • σ = √σ²

  • For frequency data:
    σ² = [Σfᵢ(xᵢ – x̄)²] / Σfᵢ

  1. Coefficient of Variation (CV):

  • Relative measure of dispersion

  • CV = (σ / x̄) × 100%

Example: For data 2, 4, 6 → x̄ = 4

  • Variance = [(2–4)² + (4–4)² + (6–4)²]/3 = (4 + 0 + 4)/3 = 8/3 ≈ 2.67

  • Standard deviation = √2.67 ≈ 1.63

Combined Mean and Standard Deviation

  1. Combined Mean:

  • If two data sets with n₁, x̄₁ and n₂, x̄₂ are combined:
    x̄ = (n₁x̄₁ + n₂x̄₂) / (n₁ + n₂)

  1. Combined Standard Deviation:

  • For two combined sets:
    σ² = [Σ(x – x̄)²] / N (using deviation from mean formula)

Applications of Statistics in JEE Main

  • Solve data interpretation problems in MCQs

  • Analyze large numerical data sets efficiently

  • Basis for probability, regression, and correlation problems

  • Frequently tested in integer-type and numerical questions

Example: Given frequency distribution of marks, find mean, median, mode, and standard deviation for exam analysis.
