The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has introduced significant changes for the 2026 board examinations. These updates aim to reduce student pressure, improve accuracy in marking, and align with the National Education Policy (NEP).
If you are appearing for your boards in 2026, here is everything you need to know:
Starting from the 2026 session, Class 10 students will have the opportunity to appear for board exams twice a year.
First Exam: Held in February-March (Compulsory).
Second Exam: Held in May (Optional). If a student wishes to improve their scores in subjects like Science, Maths, or Social Science, they can take this second attempt. The best of the two scores will be considered for the final result.
To ensure faster and error-free results, CBSE is moving toward digital checking for Class 12 answer sheets.
Answer scripts will be scanned and checked by examiners on computers.
This "On-Screen Marking" system eliminates totaling errors and manual calculation mistakes.
Note: With the implementation of this highly accurate system, the traditional process of marks verification after results might be discontinued.
For Class 10, the Science and Social Science papers will now feature a more organized layout:
Science: Clear, separate sections for Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.
Social Science: Dedicated sections for History, Geography, Political Science, and Economics.
Students must write answers within the designated sections. Mixing answers from different subjects may lead to a deduction in marks.
CBSE has tightened the rules regarding exam center entry to maintain discipline.
Reporting Time: While the exam starts at 10:30 AM, students must enter the center before 10:00 AM.
No entry will be permitted after 10:00 AM under any circumstances.
Always carry your School ID Card along with your official CBSE Admit Card.
The exam pattern is shifting away from "rote learning" (memorization) to testing real-world understanding.
50% of Questions: Will be Competency-Based (Case studies, source-based questions, and practical applications).
20% of Questions: Objective type (MCQs).
30% of Questions: Short and long-form descriptive answers.
The 2026 guidelines are designed to make the examination process more student-friendly. While Class 10 students get a "second chance" to improve their marks, Class 12 students benefit from a more transparent digital marking system. Focus on understanding the concepts rather than just memorizing definitions!
