These measures represent the center or average of a dataset.
The mean is calculated by dividing the sum of all observations by the total number of observations.
Formula: Mean = Σx / n
Example: Find the mean of 2, 4, 6, 8.
Mean = (2+4+6+8)/4 = 20/4 = 5
The median is the middle value in an ordered dataset.
Example: Data: 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 → Median = 7
For even number of observations: 2, 4, 6, 8 → Median = (4+6)/2 = 5
The mode is the value that occurs most frequently in the dataset.
Example: 2, 3, 3, 4, 5 → Mode = 3
Dispersion measures how spread out data values are.
Range = Maximum value – Minimum value
Example: Data: 5, 10, 15 → Range = 15 – 5 = 10
Variance shows how far the data values deviate from the mean.
Formula: σ² = Σ(xi – x̄)² / n
Example: Data: 2, 4, 6, 8, Mean = 5
Variance = [(2–5)² + (4–5)² + (6–5)² + (8–5)²]/4 = (9+1+1+9)/4 = 20/4 = 5
Standard deviation is the square root of variance: σ = √σ²
Example: Data above → SD = √5 ≈ 2.236
Mean deviation is the average of absolute differences from the mean.
Example: Data: 2, 4, 6 → Mean = 4
MD = (|2–4| + |4–4| + |6–4|)/3 = (2 + 0 + 2)/3 = 4/3 ≈ 1.33
